Moorea

Moorea (Mo'orea) is pronounced in four syllables with the accent on the third. Just a few miles from Tahiti, it is one of the Society Islands in French Polynesia.  In the old days, the principal occupations appear to have been procreation, warfare, and cannibalism.  The population of Moorea was 30-50,000 prior to the arrival of Europeans, subsequently reduced by disease to about 2,000.  Today there are about 13,000 people on Moorea, many of whom work on Tahiti and commute via ferry. Tourism is by far the largest industry, followed (distantly) by pineapple farming
